It's not a QotD or anything, but if you asked me for one "rock" band, I would tell you to listen to Ash. Their guitar work is superb. Their range is amazing. I was digging around in my iTunes library and I have 9 songs rates 4 stars or more. That's more songs than I rate for most band in total. I wish I could post one of my favorites, but I'd rather not do that whole copyright thing here on Vox. If you are so inclined, do try and find 5am Eternal.
Or maybe I would recommend The Pixes.
Following up on Rafe's top ten, here's my current list:
I guess it also makes sense to list the weekly artist list:
We have been worthless
we have been safe
in mind belittled by the threat
or our own ice age
it fades our fingers
that cannot grasp
the tools that injured,
bled or burned us in the pastA fall distorts us
and where we've been
re-writing bastards as contenders
sight unseen
In place of angels - butchers hands
too wide to fit through doors of virtueBlame, demand
Blame and demand
No need of virtue
no time for chance
great plains of anger worked to death
by circumstance
ignite your answers
they fought that hard
to waste your wonders and endeavors
from the startWe count for distance
Blame and demand
from human nerves
we count for all the things we take
that we don't deserve
all contradictions
will wake us to stand
to fake the end as the beginning
To The Prids. You will do it now. You will thank me later. And by "me" I mean jwz.
The Prids are, by far, my favorite band of the year. Not only do these two albums occupy slot one on this list, let's pretend they occupy the first five slots. They have a male and female singer, sometimes singing simultaneously, and awesome bass. If I didn't know better, I'd swear this was a lost Factory Records band circa 1982: they would squeeze in quite nicely between Movement-era New Order, A Certain Ratio, and maybe Durutti Column. But don't get me wrong: I'm not accusing them of being some nostalgia-pastiche band like She Wants Revenge (who are just one step up from being a cover band, really). The Prids are so much better than that kind of thing, they are just... stylistically familiar.
Update:
I was looking for some new music when that one guy I know suggested Eskimo Joe. He'd heard them play at a company party and thought they were pretty good. They're not bad at all. I would describe them as an American Coldpay. Give them a shot, you might like them.
Next up is a bit of a blast from the past. Polak is a British band formed by the lead singer from Adorable (and probably somebody else, but it's not the easiest band to get info on). If you really liked Adorable you might not like this, it's much more mellow. If you liked Adorable because of the lead singers voice, you might like Polak. Who knows.
Film at 11.
I heard 'Waiting Room' by Fugazi during Thursday's football game on FOX. It's over. We win!
Bumper music has always been one of those areas where music nerds like myself can hide quality. During the half-time show you'll hear the pop-drivel of the day, but if you listen hard during the seconds that nobody seems to care about getting payola for, you will hear quality music. Hell, even the interns for Rush Limbaugh get in stuff that would make a good chunk of the ditto heads go bonkers if they knew what they were hearing.
While we're on the music thing, if you are into anything even remotely close to industrial or anything with heavily distorted vocals, drum machines, and power chords you really need to check out Damage Manual. Seriously. Do it.
What's your favorite music for a Sunday morning?

"Close Your Eyes" from the latest Chemical Brothers album.
Musical genres are a tough thing to deal with. Many artists despise being put in some generic bucket with a bunch of other people or groups, they're unique damnit! Or at least that's how they feel about it. You could use something overly generic, like "rock" -- except that makes you think of Led Zeppelin and not that brand new band your trying to describe to someone.
Trying to use a term like "punk" is even harder as the people who are really into punk have very stringent rules for what can, and more importantly what cannot, get the punk label. So what of this band I'm trying to get to, +44 (pronounced Sum 44)? I would call it either "pop punk" or the even more insulting "bubblegum punk." A couple of guys from blink-182 and a couple of guys from lots of other "pop punk" bands.
When some punk rockers get old they mellow out (something about getting married and having kids probably) and some don't. These guys took the edge off, but still wanted to make music that had a little drive. A number of tracks have incredibly catchy riffs where you can't help but bob your head and tap your feet. But really only about half the album survives the skip button. As beej might say, it's no Iron Maiden.
